Water-Proofing System for Basement Walls
While our floor coating systems can be used to moisture-mitigate horizontal surfaces, we offer a “sister” system for vertical surfaces. This interior water-proofing system consists of two coats of our moisture-mitigating Hydro Polymer followed by 2 to 3 coats of our proprietary Rycon. This system halts moisture transmission and is superb for water-proofing basement walls.
What is Rycon?
Rycon is a commercial-grade elastomeric wall coating that’s approximately 10-times thicker than paint. It forms an incredibly thick yet flexible coating that helps waterproof vertical structures. Unlike other types of coatings or paints, Rycon bridges hairline cracks and provides an airtight water-proof seal. It’s suitable for use on vertical walls made of stucco, concrete, masonry and more. Our elastomeric coating is applied in liquid form, but once it dries, it hardens and chemically bonds to the substrate. Yet, Rycon remains flexible (with 600% elongation) …moving, bending and flexing as the structure expands and contracts. It retains its flexibility over a wide range of temperatures. And there are added benefits: Rycon protects substrates from damage and is chemical and mildew resistant.
Why Water Proof Vertical Substrates?
Why would anyone want to coat vertical walls? The short answer is moisture vapor transmission. That musty odor you smell (…typically in basements) is a sure sign of latent concrete moisture. The moisture source, usually the earth itself, provides a continuous flow of humidity that passes through concrete slabs. Over time, the infiltration of moisture may lead to efflorescence, and if left unresolved, to concrete failure. More importantly, the moisture may be the source of Sick Building Syndrome and other indoor air quality (IAQ) issues. It’s for this reason that our elastomeric water-proofing system is a popular choice for homes in storm or extreme-weather regions.
